What started as a heartfelt local news story turned into a community success story, thanks to local Philadelphia officials and Pennsylvania Skill Charitable Giving.
When media outlets began covering the Vare Gymnastics Team’s struggle to afford new uniforms, Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson called on local businesses to lend a hand. Pennsylvania Skill Charitable Giving proudly answered that call with a $7,000 donation to outfit the young gymnasts with brand-new, matching leotards.
“This team’s story moved us,” said Jeanna Bouzek of Pennsylvania Skill Charitable Giving. “They’re proof that dedication and community spirit can overcome any obstacle.”
The Vare Gymnastics team, based at South Philadelphia’s Vare Recreation Center, has been competing for years with determination and passion, often facing teams with larger budgets and more resources. Head Coach Kristin Smerker, who began the program in 1998, said the donation means more than just uniforms; it’s about pride and confidence.
“They’ve trained in old gyms, moved around the city, and never stopped believing in themselves,” Smerker said. “This donation will let them walk into a meet and feel confident, equal, and proud.”
The team plans to debut their new gear at the upcoming Liberty Cup, a major USA Gymnastics event in early December. With about 130 participants and a long waiting list, Vare Gymnastics has become a symbol of resilience and community for South Philadelphia families.
Council President Johnson and State Senator Anthony Williams both praised the gift, recognizing how it uplifts young athletes and promotes local pride.
“This is about more than new leotards,” said Council President Johnson. “It’s about building confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of belonging.”
